Proactive Ethics to Mitigate Compliance Issues

16 Weeks | Instructor-Led | Graduate Level CE

Time Commitment: 20 Hours (Basic PEP) | 40 Hours (Advanced PEP)

Description

This is a blended course with an initial face-to-face meeting, followed with subsequent online meetings. After the initial meeting, all lectures and work will be completed in the Texas A&M-Central Texas Learning Management System (LMS) = Canvas.

This is not a self-paced course. Participants will have online lectures, reading, and discussion assignments to complete each week. There will be a single quiz for those seeking the Basic PEP Certificate, and an additional quiz for those pursuing the Advanced PEP Course. Weekly participation in the online lectures is strongly encouraged for all classes, and a minimum number is required to pass the course. This course is pass/incomplete only for grading purposes.

Successful completion of this course will require:

  1. Submitting responses to the weekly discussions
    • Minimum of 6 out of 8 discussions for the Basic course
    • Minimum of 12 out of 16 discussions for the Advanced course
  2. Quiz completion
    • One quiz completed for Basic course
    • One additional quiz completed for the Advanced course (Two Total = One for Basic and One for Advanced)

Average time to complete weekly reading and assignments is 2.5 hours. Lectures will last approximately 2 hours for reading, and will be conducted weekly.

What you'll learn

This course provides proactive ethics instruction to help mitigate compliance issues (Basic) and Administrative, Academic, Financial, Research, and Athletics issues (Advanced), through the Proactive Ethics Program (PEP) provided by the Texas A&M University System – Office of System Ethics and Compliance. Legal, Ethical and Moral definitions are provided, with a focus on ethical theories and ethical decision-making procedures to mitigate potential ethical and legal issues.

Basic PEP

  1. Morals, Ethics, Law, Ethical Theories, and Ethical Decision Making Processes
  2. Ethical Theories – Egalitarianism, Deontology, Authoritarianism, Utilitarianism, Normativism
  3. Ethical Decision-Making Processes – Fremgen, Purtillo, Worthley
  4. Proactive Ethics: Using Ethics Theories and Ethical Decision-Making Processes to Mitigate Compliance Issues (Two Case Reviews)

Advanced PEP (includes all of above plus the following)

  1. Overview of Advanced PEP with Top 20 Combinations of Ethics Theories & Ethics Decision Making Processes; Professional Ethics with focus on Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP)
  2. Business Ethics with focus on TAMUS Regs
  3. Organizational Ethics with focus on TAMUS Regs
  4. Social Ethics with focus on TAMUS Regs
  5. Ethical Theories & Ethical Decision-Making Processes Top 20: To Mitigate Ethical/Legal Issues in Administrative, Academic, Financial, Research and Athletics Departments/Divisions

Prerequisites

This course assumes no previous/prerequisite knowledge of ethics and compliance. However, it is recommended that an introductory level of ethics is known by students, such as the information provided by the ethics courses through the Texas A&M University System TrainTraq program entitled “Ethics” and “Ethics and Fraud.”
